Steven Saltzman, former president of the Jazz Institute of Chicago (seen in a photo by JJA member Marc PoKempner), has been a major influence on programming for the annual Chicago Jazz Festival and a strong voice for promotion of the greater jazz scene of Chicago. Born in Akron, Ohio, brought into jazz in a big way around the time he graduated from college in St. Louis (circa 1970-71), and gaining his higher jazz education at Joe Segal's Jazz Showcase while attending law school at University of Chicago, Saltzman has worked steadily to raise the level of recognition of the JIC, a grass-roots non-profit organization whose executive director Lauren Deutsch and founding president Dick Wang were cited by the JJA as "A Team" honorees in 2008, board member-secretary Jim DeJong and consulting health-care provider Dr. Dave Hinkamp in 2003, and major corporate underwriters (convened as the Chicago Jazz Partnership) in 2005.
Besides being know for having served as president of the Jazz Institute, Steve Saltzman is regarded in Chicago as an attorney who puts his all into representing his clients. We know for a fact that he has brought the same unsparing determination to his work on behalf of the Jazz Institute and indeed, jazz. -- JJA
